With triple-digit heat in the forecast for the foreseeable future, it’s high time one of summer’s quintessential foods — a weenie on a bun — has a last hurrah. Here we show you where to grab some uncommon combinations of the hot-weather classic while the getting’s good.
Hot Dog Days of Summer
8 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily through September
Joe’s Farm Grill, 3000 E. Ray Road, Gilbert
(480) 563-4745 or joesfarmgrill.com
Take an all-beef, natural-casing frank, grill it on the broiler, stuff it in a fresh-baked, buttered and grilled bun, and top it with garlic mashed potatoes and lingonberries. Or pulled pork and coleslaw. Or smoked ham, Swiss cheese and a fried egg. However you dress it, you get one of 10 limited-time specialty hot dogs. Flavors include the Hawaiian, Asian, Sonoran, Cordon Bleu, Carolina, 3B (bacon, blue cheese and barbecue sauce), Rueben, Buffalo, Swedish and Trailer Park. They’re available, with fries, every day in September for $6.99 (one dog) or $9.99 (two dogs).
Italian sausages at Queen Creek Olive Mill’s Grill in the Grove
10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 5
Queen Creek Olive Mill, 25062 S. Meridian Road
(480) 888-9290 or queencreekolivemill.com
Hot and sweet Italian sausages fresh off the outdoor grill are pillowed on a ciabatta bun and slathered in your choice of tapenade at this Labor Day party with live music. Choose from a Peachy Piggy (with Peach Caponatina Tapenade), a Figgy Piggy (with Caramelized Red Onion & Fig Tapenade) or a Pepper Piggy (with Sweet Red Pepper & Olive Tapenade). They’re served with a side of Sicilian slaw for $8.99.
Ted’s Hot Dogs, 1755 E. Broadway Road, Tempe
(480) 968-6678 or tedsonline.com
Ted’s is widely known for tasty dogs charbroiled over real hardwood charcoal. They also do their own homemade hot sauce and handmade onion rings. Worth trying is the “white hot,” a mild, tender light-colored sausage made of pork and veal also known as bockwurst, “porkers” or “coneys,” depending on where you’re from. Dogs come plain on a potato bun for $3.45, but you can dress them up with any combination of mustard, ketchup, mayo, relish, homemade hot sauce, onion, dill pickles, lettuce or tomato. Sauerkraut, peppers and onions, and chili and cheese are also available.
