RACE NOTE [Aug. 29, 2012; 9:29 a.m.]: With three seats up for grab in the Tuesday, Aug. 28 primary, Nora Ellen was the only candidate to secure enough votes to win a seat outright. With two seats to be contested in November's general election, four candidates -- Jack Sellers, Rick Heumann, Scott Taylor and Terry Roe -- advance to the Nov. 6 general election.

The City of Chandler will hold a Primary Election on Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2012 for the purpose of electing a Mayor and three Councilmembers. The polls will be open from 6 a.m. until 7 p.m.

Participation in the Aug. 28 Primary Election is important as Chandler City Council candidates have the ability to be elected at the Primary Election if they receive a majority of the votes cast. The votes cast will be determined from the total amount of ballots cast for the office of mayor.

Residents must be registered to vote by Monday, July 30, 2012 to be eligible to vote in the Primary Election.

The last day to request an early ballot by mail is Aug. 17, 2012.

Voters who have registered for placement on the Permanent Early Voting List and are registered as “independent” or “party not designated”, WILL NOT automatically receive an early ballot. One must either request a “city-only” ballot or must declare a party affiliation to participate in the Primary Election.

Early voting for the Primary Election may be done in person at Chandler City Hall, 175 S. Arizona Ave., Monday through Friday, Aug. 6 through Aug. 24 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Early voting is also available at the Maricopa County Recorder’s offices. The Town of Gilbert is also an early voting site. Please visit their websites for the hours of operation.

Prior to the Primary Election, a sample ballot will be mailed to each household that has a registered voter. The polling location specific to the address you are registered at will be indicated on the sample ballot.

A General Election shall be held on Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2012 to fill any elected offices that remain unfilled after the Primary Election.

For more information, please contact the Chandler City Clerk at (480)782-2180 or the Maricopa County Elections Department at (602) 506-1511.
