David Schapira is the Democratic Leader in the Arizona State Senate. His legislative district encompasses most of Tempe and South Scottsdale and is a large portion of the new Congressional District 9.
David is a third-generation Arizonan who was born in West Mesa. He has dedicated his life to serving his community as a high school teacher, instructor at Arizona State University, Governing Board member of Tempe Union High School District and small-business owner.
The Arizona Republic recently named David as one of “Tempe’s Exemplary People” in recognition of his commitment to the community in which he lives and serves. The Republic had previously recognized him as a “Lawmaker Who Made a Difference” and as an “Emerging Leader Worth Watching.” The Arizona Student Association, American Cancer Society, Mothers Against Drunk Driving, and the Arizona Technology Council all have praised David as a top legislator.
Before deciding to run for elected office, David worked diligently to transform his belief—that every Arizona student deserves the opportunity to receive a quality education¬—into reality. As a high school teacher and ASU faculty member, David has seen firsthand the challenges facing our educational system. As a two-term State Representative, and most recently as a State Senator and Democratic Leader, David has made the education of Arizona’s children his main legislative priority.
In addition to education, David’s work at the Legislature has focused on protection of the middle class, responsible fiscal and budgetary policy, and the creation of sustainable economic growth.
David and his wife, Rosemary, live in Tempe where they are raising their two young daughters, Elliot and Sydney, alongside their Pug-Rat Terrier named Goliath.
