Greg Land - East Valley Tribune: Elections

Greg Land

Children are our most valuable resource and teaching is one of the most undervalued professions in our culture. I am proud to have served as an advocate for you, your kids and teachers and I am looking forward to serving another term on the Higley Unified School District Governing Board. In the last four years we have seen significant growth in several areas in Higley, not just in student population. We have gone from an overlooked district suffering with growing pains to one of the top districts in the state that is a leader in educational practices, policies and, most importantly, performance. Student achievement and accomplishments place Higley in the top 4 districts in the state. Relationships between students, teachers, parents, and administrators have improved significantly. The district now has momentum and I would like to continue to help Higley move forward. Recent district accomplishments include:

• Graduation rate 94%

• College placement rate 83%

• Teacher turnover 2011 of 14%, down from 25% in 2007 and national average of 18%

• Base teacher pay increased 16% since 2008

• Reduced taxes by refinancing previous bond debt, saving $471,209.00

• Budget and board meetings available on web page

• Over 350 business partners

I have served on the school board for 6 years. During my tenure I have helped the district through times of significant and rapid growth, the construction and opening of several of our schools, and minimizing the damage of state budget cuts. In addition to my service on the board, I have professional experience in banking, data processing, construction, owning and operating a small business for over 14 years and involvement in athletics as a student athlete, coach and official. This background gives me a unique set of skills which I will continue to use as a positive influence on the Higley Unified School District Governing Board. For example, we need to build two new schools and with my experience in the construction, funding, staffing, stocking and boundary decisions related to building, opening and operating schools, I will be able to help move this process along smoothly.

My kids have attended Higley schools since 2001 and my wife and I have been active in PTO & booster organizations, Higley Education Foundation, site councils, our church and various community events and programs. I am open and available to the community and I have a proven track record including my willingness to listen to different and often opposing view points and lead the board to a consensus and the best plan of action for the district and community. Thank you, I sincerely appreciate your vote and support. Please see my web site www.reelectgregland.com and Facebook page Greg Land for Higley School Board for more information and updates.
