Very touching story. I had a similar experience with my dog of 14 years. She had heart failure for several years and I kept her going with modern medicine for selfish reasons. I finally had to put her down two years ago and still have weepy moments of missing her and reading your story brought it all back to me. I still have dreams about her and miss her tremendously and can't bear to part with her things. Maybe some ay I'll have another dog but for now the pain of losing another pet is holding me back. I have three children so I'm not an animal fanatic, but the unconditional love and happiness she brought was special in its own way.
Over the last fourteen years I've rescued five dogs. I still have two 13 year old Golden Retrievers, brother and sister. I hadn't had a pet since I was 5 so as an adult I had all of the same funny preconceived ideas of how they should be treated and what they should or shouldn't be allowed to do. It didn't take long at all to realize how domestic and individual these creatures are. Now the one and only rule in my home is that the animals are allowed to go wherever they want in the home because everything is cleanable. I made this rule after watching my first Golden go through the painful process of cancer which eventually took his life. I will continue to rescue as many animals as I can responsibly handle and care for. They are a gift and I treasure all of them.
Michelle, I am so sorry for the loss of your baby. They are your family. I, started with 5 Chihuahua's and now am down to 2, know the pain you and your family are going through. I lost my first in 2005, the second in 2008 and the most recent in 2010 to a very quick (24 hours) illness that the Vet diagnosed as Lung Cancer. It hurts, you miss them for life. Taking in another from the pound or shelter is a great way to "honor" your loss, these babies need homes too. Our house is busy! God Bless.

After the latest bill failed to pass through the Senate, do you feel there will be any more attempts at mandating more background checks for gun purchases?
