I wish more people would open their homes to the elderly. Just their aged presence and inclusion makes them feel they matter. Even if it's just watching the great grandchildren from a recliner--they are part of the conversation and they are generally so wise. Supporting life means cradle to grave. If you visit nursing homes and assisted living facilities, there is no way all people's needs can be met like they can within the framework of a multi-generational family setting. Lifespans usually increase when the elderly are included in a family setting. Kudos to you for providing that for your friend.

I am not sure which I like best, Linda Turley Hansen's column or JMJ's comment above. The elderly are precious assets that should be treated that way. Their life experience is a vital element that is missing from much of our youth. With far flung families and vanishing elderly family members as part of the home, we are missing out. Want to give your kids and some older folks a gift for life, bring your kids to visit a nursing or assisted living home to just say Hi to people in the dining room.
