Arizona Corporation Commission members are proposing that six natural-gas companies doing business in the state reduce the amount of fuel they sell by 6 percent by 2020.
The five elected utility regulators on Tuesday began a rule-making process that would require the gas companies to expand their conservation programs and likely launch new programs to help homeowners and businesses use less fuel.
The rules would likely lead to more rebates for people who buy efficient gas furnaces or businesses that buy more efficient boilers and other natural-gas equipment.
Commission Chairwoman Kris Mayes says requiring gas companies to reduce the amount of gas consumers use by 6 percent moves Arizona toward a more sustainable and energy-efficient future.
