My name is Matt Nelson and I am running for University Lakes Justice of the Peace (east Tempe and south Scottsdale district). These courts are very important to the average resident of the district. If you come into contact with the justice system, it probably either will be in a justice court or a municipal court. The justice courts handle civil and criminal traffic cases, evictions, orders of protection, injunctions of harassment, and civil cases that involve $10,000 or less (small claims).
I am the best candidate to be the Justice of the Peace because of my experience and training. I am the only candidate that has graduated from Law School. I graduated from Arizona State University Law School with a Highest Pro Bono Distinction Award and a Pedrick Scholar award. My opponents have never been to law school. I am the only candidate that has taken and passed the Arizona Bar exam which gives the right to practice law in Arizona. My opponents can not practice law in Arizona or any state. I have seen both sides of the courtroom. I have been a prosecutor and a defense attorney. My opponents have never represented anyone in a court room. I am a member of the Tempe Police Citizen Review Board from 2005 to the present. This Board reviews police conduct based on complaints from citizens or referrals from the police department.
My previous background before becoming a lawyer also qualifies me for this position. I received an honorable discharge from the U.S. Air Force and was elected to represent steelworkers in Chicago. I resolved workplace disputes between employers and employees in the steel industry and well as negotiated contracts. I then worked for state government resolving workplace disputes between employees and employers in hundreds of workplaces.
I am running as an independent. I believe we should have independence in our justice system and justice should not be beholden to anyone or any party. I am also not accepting any contributions from any individuals, companies, unions, parties or organizations of any sort. Please take some time and vote for this position on November 2nd.
