Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio will celebrate his 80th birthday on Thursday.
The sheriff says he has special plans to mark his birthday, but declined to reveal them.
He says he remains in good health and wants to be "the poster boy for senior citizens."
The Republican sheriff has served five terms as sheriff and is seeking re-election in November.
He faces a challenge from retired Phoenix police officer Paul Penzone and Scottsdale police Lt. Mike Stauffer.
Penzone is running as a Democrat, while Stauffer is running as an Independent.

Arpaio is one of the most unprofessional law enforcement officers I have ever known. He has turned a crusade (AKA his agenda) into a debacle where major felonies go un-investigated, mis-managed his office, mis-managed his budget and cost the taxpayers million and millions in lawsuits against his unprofessional office. Thank God he and his office do not represent the many other fine departments in the Valley. It amazes me the number of brainwashed groupies this silver tongued man has. He was lucky to escape the public trial and conviction of his co-hort, county attorney anderson. How, I don't know. He needs to go so the Valley can heal and move on.

Look i do not like sheriff Joe, i had the pleasure of staying in lower buck-eye 24 hrs for dui Az has the toughest laws in US now Joe was not the one who put me there, and let me tell you talk about scared straight had the Judge that sentenced, me made me go to that Jail not Joe the Judge' and i was with 34 women i cell no place to even rest,nasty filthy conditions, they try to make you freak out so they can tase you to death, it is not right how you are treated, but i will tell you one thing there were native american., whites, and Mexican , we were all treated the same, like just like a dog, i did not expect room service
