WASHINGTON (AP) — Mitt Romney has clinched the Republican nomination for president with a win in the Texas primary.
The Associated Press delegate count shows that Romney surpassed the 1,144 delegates needed to win the nomination during Tuesday's primary. Early returns show Romney posting a big win in Texas.
It's a triumph of endurance for a candidate who came up short four years ago and had to fight hard this year as voters flirted with a carousel of GOP rivals.
Romney reached the nomination milestone with a steady message of concern about the U.S. economy, a campaign organization that dwarfed those of his GOP opponents, and a fundraising operation second only to that of his Democratic opponent in the general election, President Barack Obama

The thing that troubles me the most is the fact that most folks in Arizona think the Republican primary has taken place. The truth is the Republican primary in Arizona does not take place until August. The shame of an election that took place earlier this year was a "Presidential Preference Election” paid for by the Republican Party. Most logical people would have just assumed they already voted in the primary. It’s really a shame that our leaders must use these tactics against us to achieve their ends. I’m not sure if this is the case in other states, but let’s say for the sake of argument it is. Then basically what has happened is the American people have been fooled into thinking Mitt Romney was the people’s choice when in fact he was the party choice. It’s no wonder candidates like Ron Paul or Rick Santorum cannot win. They are not the chosen ones. The question is, what or whom did Romney really clinch?
