[innocent] Just wondering after reading this article.....How or when did We The People come to the conclusion that the spouse of an elected official is automatically assumed qualified to take their place? I know this is not just an Arizona "thing" since I've heard of it before for other officials in other states. Looking around in the County today, I could pick at least one spouse that should NOT fall into office, should the unexpected occur. Just wondering.

I concur. Why would anyone consider it appropriate for the spouse of a politican that dies in office to be selected tod replace them?

This is not a partisan issue, nor reflective in any manner towards this paticular person.

When a person is voted into office it is them, their politics, experience, etc. that the people vote on. A spouse may even be a better office holder but they have not been vetted and voted on and have no right to hold a voting positlion in any elected office.

Now, if the appointment is an Honorary position, with no voting rights, I can see it as a token of respect and honor towards the person that is deceased but in no case should they have a vote on any issue.

Just think, we have a procedure for succession of our President if they die in office and thier spouses do not take over. Again, this is not reflective of anyone's politics nor party, it is common sense and too important an issue to continue like this.
