Republican Sen. John McCain framed the porousness of America's borders as both a national security concern and a human rights issue Sunday in the only scheduled general election debate in Arizona's U.S. Senate race.
Democratic challenger Rodney Glassman says McCain's emphasis on border security was meant to further the four-term senator's political future.
The issue of America's porous borders, illegal immigration and drug violence in Mexico took center stage at the debate.
McCain emphasized that the U.S. must first secure the border before it confronts the economic realities that motivate people to come into the country illegally.
Glassman says the country has to find a way to let foreign workers come into the country legally.

Mr. McCain is belaboring this touchy subject that nobody has a clue how to resolve. Maybe Sheriff Joe can collaborate and elaborate along with AZ's gov and bring their ideas to those on The Hill on how it should be done. At least he's pro-active on a subject that our officials remain inactive and clueless. It's long past due to tell Mexico to keep their citizens under control...otherwise, the answer is to boycott on their fancy, expensive tourist attractions and resorts. Let's spend the money in our own country, at least until Mexico's thugs and drug lords kill each other off.

Doesn't anyone realize how little McCain has done for Arizona. For all his years in office we have received nothing, but he is head of some committees. Ted Stevens, who was found innocent of shady deals, at least provided Alaska with enough money in earmarks that they can show something for his tenure. McCain's opposition to earmarks is very high and mighty, but as long as everyone else is doing it, and he has no influence on others to stop (e.g. Palin) its time for him to get off his high horse and get Arizona some necessary jobs money, etc.

McCain has had 28 years to do something about the border and immigration, and the fact that there is still a serious problem underscores what a failure he has been to Arizona on that. It also serves as an example of how McCain has failed our stae in every way. It's time to send someone else who has a plan and will do something intelligent for Arizona. I'm voting for Rodney Glassman.
