A federal judge is refusing to delay the next round of a hearing on whether Arizona school programs for students learning English now comply with federal mandates on equal opportunities in education.
Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Horne had asked for the delay, saying his current lawyers won't be available to resume the hearing in January.
U.S. District Raner C. Collins denied the request without comment.
A previous judge ruled in 2000 that the programs were inadequate, but the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in June that Arizona is entitled to a fresh review.

Santana, how does Mexico's education system rate compared to ours? Not so good as we both know. I suspect that the large percentage of non English speaking students has a great deal to do with AZ's rating nationwide. You can spin it however you like, but everyone of them should already be English speakers before they are allowed into our school system. When you talk of other countries and their contributions to this great country, you are speaking largely of the past. We are trying to route a path to the future and do not feel we have the money to waste on teaching non English speaking people in our public school system. I'm sorry, but why should we want to limit our own kids education by wasting money teaching your children English? They will only hold our children back.

Obviously you both have much to read about other countries and and their contribution to this great country which was built by immigrant labors. History can be viewed differently from many different angles and are seen through a different set of eyes and circumstances. If you are any kind of proponent of education you would understand how our education system is at the bottom of the barrel compared to the many other systems around the world, which choose to embrace the truth of their surroundings both ethnically and geographically. Read some books and try to further and expand your one sided thinking process.

I agree with you 100%. If the general public only knew about all the training teachers go through in this state to teach ELL students, they'd see how much it takes away from the general classroom. All I can say is that AZ is near last in education for a reason and teaching illegals is one of the biggest ones.

Last I heard, to be an American citizen you have to be able to SPEAK, READ, and WRITE ENGLISH BEFORE you can become a citizen. If they aren't citizens, why should we have to pay for their education, let alone special programs because they lack the ability...
