Napolitano, White House against ending birthright citizenship

WASHINGTON — The Obama administration says it's wrong to try to change the constitutional amendment that grants automatic citizenship to babies born in the United States.

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano says she's surprised that Republican congressional leaders are joining a push to reconsider the 14th Amendment instead of working with Democrats on comprehensive immigration reform. Napolitano says that's "just wrong."

White House spokesman Robert Gibbs says President Barack Obama agrees with Napolitano.

Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky has said he supports holding hearings to reconsider the citizenship rights of illegal immigrants' babies born in the U.S. But he emphasized that Washington should remain focused on border security.

    The 14th Amendment rights are: “All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside”.

    And these ‘constitutional’ rights should not be infringed upon by not giving birthright citizenship to children who are born in the United States to illegal immigrant parents.

    So true, slabside - why doesn't anyone else see this -- Either way - get out and vote republican, since they seem to be the ones in touch with this reality... Together we can perhaps show Obahama how his 'righteous' outlook is damaging to the REAL America

    Take the issue directly to the SCOTUS and stop the debate.
    I agree that 'birthright' citizenship is wrong and a mis-use of the original intent of the 14th amendment.
    However, the 2010 relevancy MUST be debated and ruled on.
    Push for a SCOTUS ruling.[smile]

    This idiocy is being talked up by the well-funded white supremacist organization F.A.I.R. (Federation for American Immigration Reform) across the country. Yes, the same organization who was mentor to Russell Pearce and authored the ill-begotten SB 1070, the same organization who wrote unconstitutional immigration enforcement laws for various U.S. cities that lost in the courts and cost those cities millions in attorneys' fees.

    The guest editorial in today's Republic (Aug. 24) by noted author Gregory J. Wallace might wake up some of those who have fallen for the hype. It's titled, "Bid to toss birthright citizenship is dumb."

    There membership includes both liberals and conservatives, and RACE isn't an issue for membership. So stating that it's a "well-funded white supremacist organization" can be considered LIBEL. Mayhaps I should advise F.A.I.R.
