Twelve short works by local and national playwrights and a group of Phoenix students will be performed this month at ASU West and the state Capitol.
The “Performing 1070 Short-Play Festival” explores themes surrounding Arizona’s controversial illegal immigration law, according to a news release.
New Carpa Theater Company, founded by Phoenix playwright James Garcia, is producing the 5- to 10-minute plays. Garcia also worked with a group of Carl Hayden High School students to bring a series of vignettes they wrote to the stage.
Among the works to be performed is this one by Stella Pope Duarte of Phoenix: “Joe Arpaio Meets La Virgen de Guadalupe.” The plot: Sheriff Joe tries to arrest the Virgin of Guadalupe in the desert.
Performances are 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., March 30 in La Sala A at ASU West, 4701 W. Thunderbird Road, Glendale, and 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., March 31 on the capitol lawn, 1700 W. Washington St.
