TUCSON - A Mexican woman suspected of trying to smuggle six children into the U.S. using false documents has been arrested at a southern Arizona border crossing, federal authorities said.
The 48-year-old woman from Nogales, Mexico, was taken into custody Wednesday while trying to cross at the Nogales port of entry, Customs and Border Protection officials said.
An officer became suspicious during routine screening and questioning of the woman about the children in her vehicle.
A CBP news release said officers learned the children's documents were not theirs.
The children, ages 5 to 13, were turned over to Mexican consular officials.
The woman was arrested on suspicion of alien smuggling.
Illegal immigrants who have left their children in their homeland have been hiring strangers to take the youngsters into this country in increasing numbers in recent years.
