What a waste of tax payer money. The rich ball clubs should pay for their own stuff.

"Smith said while Mesa voters are often known for rejecting things on election day - including an Arizona Cardinals stadium about a decade ago - this proposal was more thought-out."
Smith knows better than to utter such a falsehood. Yes MANY years ago Mesa voters turned down a Cardinals stadium (as did other east valley cities, but not by voters.)
Since then generous Mesa voters approved every humongous subsidy for big business that has been on the ballot.
(1) Riverview retail shopping center: Kimco and DeRito developers (Kimco is on the NY stock exchange.)
(2) Waveyard - speculative, never got off the ground, no available financing
(3) Gaylord Hotel/Entertainment - property tax exemption, bed tax rebates -- never got off the ground, economy tanked
(4) Chicago Cubs new stadium, etc. - cost, location & details anybody's guess
Heavy advertising campaigns by beneficiaries for all. The only one with a viable track record in Mesa is the Cubs.

"About 63 percent of voters OK'd Mesa's plan for an $84 million complex in northwest Mesa that will open in 2013."
Wow! That’s the same construction cost as one mile light-rail . . . at $84 million-a-mile cost to build the proposed 2.7 mile light-rail extension construction on Main Street in Mesa.
