GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK - A man who died when the boat he was in flipped over in the Grand Canyon was identified Tuesday as a Colorado resident.

Grand Canyon National Park officials say 45-year-old Randall Johnson of Grand Junction, Colo. was on a private 21-day rafting trip on the Colorado River when the boat flipped over while shooting a rapid on Sunday. His companions pulled him from the water after several minutes and tried unsuccessfully to revive him.

Park rangers were unable to come to his aid because of his location on a remote stretch of the river.

His body was taken downriver by his group and later recovered by National Park Service officials.

An autopsy by the Coconino County medical examiner is set for today.
