An initiative campaign is under way to ask Arizona voters to approve a ballot measure on state parks funding.

The proposal supported by a group called Citizens to Save Arizona’s Natural Resources would protect parks funding from transfers that legislators have used to help balance the state budget.

Other provisions include allowing vehicle owners to make $14 annual donations for parks funding when registering their vehicles.

Those payments would be voluntary but a vehicle owner would have to opt out in order not to make the payment when registering a vehicle.

Supporters must collect nearly 173,000 voter signatures by July 5 to qualify the initiative proposal for the November ballot.

It was filed Thursday with the Secretary of State’s Office.
