A Phoenix area government group has been awarded $1.4 million in federal grants to help fight homelessness.

The new grant money is part of $190 million for homeless assistance programs awarded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development across the country.

The Maricopa Association of Governments will use the funding for 67 permanent housing units and an end to homelessness for more than 100 people living on the streets in the area.

Tempe councilwoman Shana Ellis says the grant money comes at a critical time as the recession has left more families and young people homeless.
