FLAGSTAFF - Arizona authorities are looking for the person who killed a bull elk near Williams and then left the carcass to rot.
The Arizona Game and Fish Department says the elk was hit with an arrow near Scholz Lake the weekend of Sept. 6 - a week before the legal elk archery season began.
An investigation also discovered that the animal had been shot several times in the head.
Game and Fish officials believe someone may have come across the wounded elk and shot it to put it out of its misery.
Agency wildlife manager Mike Rice says the killing is a blatant example of the disrespect poachers have for animals and the laws that protect them.
