TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — Arizona State University on Tuesday will officially open a new veterans center on its Tempe campus named after ex-NFL star and Army Ranger Pat Tillman.
The Pat Tillman Veterans Center is a 3,300-square-foot facility in the university's Memorial Union that will provide academic support to the school's growing enrollment of military veterans.
The goal of the center is to help veterans make a smooth transition to school life.
Tillman played linebacker for Arizona State from 1994-97 and went on to an NFL career with the Cardinals. He enlisted in the Army after three seasons in the NFL.
He died in Afghanistan in 2004 in a friendly fire incident.

The purpose of Pat Tillman Veterans Center at ASU (Tempe) is to honor Pat Tillman and support our student veterans so that they experience higher levels of successful outcomes in their educational goals.
The Tillman Vet Center is a vitally important element in creating the number one Veteran supportive university in the country.
Helping Veterans transition and reintegrate into an academic and civilian environment is another step towards success.
By offering all Veterans instate tuition, priority class registration, specialized course work, camaraderie, support services and programs, and membership in the Student Veterans Clubs and an Alumni Association - Veterans Chapter, ASU is leading the way in defining and shaping the model of the Veterans supportive initiative within the New American University.
Thank you, ASU...as a Veteran, it is an honor to be an ASU Alumnus (Class of 1974).
