At least 29 defense attorneys want Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas and his office disqualified as prosecutors in at least 43 criminal cases.
Motions filed in superior court claim Thomas' legal actions against judges and the county Board of Supervisors have made it impossible for their clients to receive fair trials.
Defense attorney Richard Gaxiola said there is a pattern of tainting jury pools and intimidating the judiciary.
The County Attorney's Office said that with nearly 1,000 employees, the office is large enough to put sufficient distance between Thomas and any specific case.
In its response, the County Attorney's Office said that as a practical matter, there would be no way to disqualify the office from a large number of cases without impacting the entire legal system.
