Five Tempe firefighters and an engine returned to the Valley after a 9-day deployment to fight the Monument Fire near Sierra Vista. The crew was back on Thursday following work to save Sierra Vista homes from 200-foot flames.
“It’s the worst fire I’ve seen by far and I’m glad to be home,” said Capt. Bill Lyall, a highly trained wildland firefighter.
Lyall was joined by Mike Kominska, Adriel Martinez, Mike Green and Kevin Bailey. The experience included fire embers flying sideways in front of crew members, deer running in front of walls of flame and winds of 50 mph. Tempe had previously sent firefighters to battle the Wallow Fire, the largest wildfire in Arizona history.
