Who would hide a bomb under an Arizona flag at a rest stop?
That question crossed the mind of a rest-area custodian after he discovered a curious object under a flag that had fallen from its flagpole on Sunday.
What he uncovered resembled a pipe bomb, according to a stateDepartment of Public Safety report.
The Canoa Rest Area near Tucson was evacuated at about 8 a.m. to allow an explosive ordnance unit from DPS to check the suspicious object.
Witnesses described it as a "cylindrical object, connected by a wire cable," according to the DPS report.
DPS officer Quentin Mehr said, however, that the bomb squad quickly discovered that the object that resembled a pipe bomb was actually quite harmless.
The ordnance team realized that the object was just a piece of the broken flagpole that had fallen during the night.
There were no signs of tampering, Mehr said.
The rest area was reopened at 10:30 a.m.
