$4.1 million is quite a birthday gift for a 5-year-old.
That’s the gift William C. Richardson of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation will present today to Arizona State University’s Center for Nonprofit Leadership and Management, which celebrates its fifth anniversary this year.
"Kellogg’s investment validates ASU’s strong efforts in this area and enhances our ability to serve the community," ASU President Michael Crow said. "Nonprofit organizations are a vital part of any community and it is critical the university provides the support needed for them to flourish."
The W.K. Kellogg foundation, established by the cereal pioneer in 1930, already has given the center $5.5 million since 1999. Each year an average of 1,500 nonprofits are started, ranging from church groups to welfare organizations. Through training, education and research, the ASU center has helped hundreds of nonprofits, including the East Valley Boys and Girls Club and Prehab of Arizona, improve their organizations and enhance their missions.
"The center plays a pivotal role in improving the abilities of nonprofits to deliver better services," said Michael Hughes, executive director of Prehab of Arizona. "They helped us revisit our mission statement, our strategic plan.
"That kind of exposure just helps us tremendously in figuring out not only where we’ve been but where we’re going," Hughes said.
The money will be distributed during a four-yearperiod. The center will use it to expand training programs and research.
